The MCPEMP (previously the Australasian Police Ministers' Council) provides a co-ordinated national response to law enforcement issues to maximise the efficient use of police resources. Since its establishment in 1980, the Council has established the National Common Police Services (NCPS) and developed a co-ordinated approach to Police policy and operations.Since 1986, the Council has a broader role of co-ordination of the national attack on organised crime and the co-operative efforts needed to achieve that goal. More recently the role has extended to include a wide range of national law enforcement policy development and implementation activities including DNA legislation, national sex offender registry, and gun control.
