Ongoing liaison with the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community identified the need for a dedicated safe space at the ACT Courts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons and their families. The new Courts building has allowed the repurposing of existing space in the original ACT Magistrates Court building for use by the community. It is the intention that the culturally sensitive space will make the experience of attending Court less stressful, and provide an opportunity for family, friends and support persons to have a space to come together. The breakout space is equipped with soft lounge style seating and a kitchenette in the main room, with two smaller adjoining meeting rooms designed for private meeting and discussion. The safe space will be opened later in 2021.
