New ACT laws in effect from 20 April 2021 provide additional protections for vulnerable adults in the ACT.

New ACT laws in effect from 20 April 2021 provide additional protections for vulnerable adults in the ACT. The Crimes (Offences Against Vulnerable People) Legislation Amendment Act 2020, passed in the ACT Legislative Assembly on 20 August 2020, creates three new offences in the Crimes Act 1900. These laws will make it a criminal offence to abuse or neglect a vulnerable person and an offence for a person in authority to fail to protect a vulnerable person in their care.

These changes will better protect adults with a disability and older, vulnerable members of the community.
